Cousin Marilyn just sent me a email telling me Merle passed away in September. I wish I would have known it at the time as I am not so far away. I am the youngest daughter of Helen's brother Ted Unruh. I live in Goodland, KS My first husband passed away at 62 (Neil Gilliland) and now I am married to Lloyd Smith who is very near Merle's age. We didn't see each other very often. . . more in younger days. His picture brings back old memories. I will be thinking of you. Irene (Unruh) Smith

The Wiedersteins have always been known to my brother and me as "Grandma Leona and Grandpa Merle," although we are not related by blood. We often made the trip to Garden City from Wichita with our parents to visit them, and I always recall Merle being one of the most gentle, kind, upbeat, happy-go-lucky men I have ever known. When I was a little girl, I just had to have a particular Cabbage Patch doll simply because its birth certificate said, "Merle." Over 20 years later, I still have that doll and its birth certificate. My toddler son likes to play with it, and it's only fitting that his "Baby" helps teach him to be kind and gentle, just like Merle was.

Merle was such friendy and upbeat person, and I always enjoyed spending time with him and Leona when my family would drive out to visit them in Garden City. He really meant a lot to my family, by being another father figure to my dad when Dad went away to work in Garden City as a young adult. Merle was also like another grandfather to me, with him and Leona continuing to send me cards and letters even after I moved to Seattle. He sure loved Kansas sports teams, and I will miss talking about K-State football and basketball with him.
My thoughts and prayers are with Leona, Sandra and the rest of Merle's family and friends. The world lost an exceptional person, but we'll never forget all the great memories that Merle left with us.

Mr Wiederstein was my 6th grade teacher at Jones Elementary. That was so long ago. My class just had our 50th class reunion this weekend. At our dinner Saturday, several of us were talking about our favorite teachers. Mr, Wiederstein was without a doubt the favorite!! And this was on the day he passed! Wow! My condolences to the family. He was a great guy!
