Most probably think of Mel as an all business kind of a guy, but the following story shares our thoughts about him:
Many years ago, our little kindergarten age daughter passed through our kitchen after school with a handful of candy that we normally did not see except on rare occasions. When I ask her where the money to buy the candy came from, she confessed that she just took the candy. I was glad on the one hand that she told the truth, but on the other hand, this had to be dealt with even if it was just a few pieces of candy, so, we had to go back to the store and tell Mel and pay for the candy. I knew he would be wise in the way he dealt with the matter, but his response was much unexpected. Our young daughter was, by now petrified.
We arrived at the store and asked to talk to Mel. He came out to see us and after she told him she had taken the candy,Mel put his hand on her shoulder and said "Yes it is very wrong to take something that is not yours and I really appreciate you coming back, telling me and offering to pay for it. If people take the things I have to sell without paying, then one day, I won't have money to buy more things to sell". Then he looked at her and said, "Do you know what we do for little girls who come back and admit what they've done? ----" at that point, Mel grabbed a good sized brown paper bag and began to fill it with handfuls of candy and gave it to our daughter ---- "here's what we do, and Thank you for coming back and apologizing, you can keep your money". She was as stunned as I was.
This true story showed the softer side of a oftentimes-firm businessman. This was a lesson learned for our daughter, that she still remembers - it pays to tell the truth and sometimes it turns out much better than you think.
We appreciated his commitment to the store, the jobs he provided and making a grocery store available to the community for all of these years. . Thank you Mel; the hardworking, hometown boy will be missed.
