Rev. Thomas N. Tran, age 61, of Garden City, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born May 10, 1947 in Saigon, Vietnam the son of Hiet Van and Lieu Thi Tran. He graduated from Tabett High School in Saigon in 1968 and then joined the Army of South Vietnam serving as a scout for the US Army. He was a P.O.W. from 1975-1978 and lived in refugee camps in Thailand and the Phillipines until 1983 when he moved to Garden City, Kansas where he worked for IBP until 1992. He became a US citizen in 1988 and became licensed to preach the gospel by the First Southern Baptist Church in Garden City, Kansas. In 1993 he was ordained and served as the pastor of the Vietnamese Missions in Garden City, Dodge City & Liberal, KS.
He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church and he taught ESL and citizenship classes to the Vietnamese community both in Garden City, Kansas.
On November 27, 1969 he married Sarah X.Pham in Vietnam. She survives.
Other Survivors Include: One Son, Vi Nhan H. Tran of Overland Park, Kansas; One Daughter, Thu Van T. Chung of Albany, Georgia and Three Granddaughters.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at the First Southern Baptist Church in Garden City, Kansas with Pastors Rick Durham and Randy Caddell presiding.
There will be no calling times.
The family requests memorials be given to the Church Mission Fund in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home of Garden City, Kansas.
