Dorothy Mae Schumacher, age 78, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Greeley County Health Center in Tribune, Kansas. Dorothy was born October 7,1932 on her grandfathers homestead Northeast of Leoti, Kansas, the daughter of Edwin "Harold" Carson & Beulah Maybel Metheney Smith. She attended a one-room school in Logan County and graduated from Scott Community High School in Scott City, Kansas in 1950. She attended Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas and later attended and graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor of Science degree and later a Master degree in Elementary Education. Dorothy taught for the Ellis Public School system where she met and married Daniel A. Schumacher on August 12,1962 at Hays, Kansas. To this union two sons were born. In 1975 the family moved to Logan County where Dorothy had grown up and began farming and raising their boys. Dorothy was a substitute teacher for Wichita County School System and began teaching both 5th and 6th grade full time as well as boys and girls basketball coach at High Plains School from 1981 until her retirement in 1991. The couple continued to live on the family farm in Logan County and watched their family grow.
Dorothy was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis, Kansas and a lifetime member of the Fort Hays State Alumni Association.
Dorothy's surviving family includes- Husband- Daniel A. Schumacher- Leoti, Kansas Two sons- Tracy Schumacher and his wife Laura- Leoti, Kansas Todd Schumacher- Leoti, Kansas Five grandchildren Megan Schumacher- Leoti, Kansas Lindsey Schumacher- Leoti, Kansas Miranda Schumacher- Overland Park, Kansas Jacob Schumacher- Leoti, Kansas Matthew Schumacher- Overland Park, Kansas
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, May 20, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Leoti, Kansas with the Reverend Mike Howard officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.
Friends may call from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Leoti, Kansas.
Memorials may be given to the Leoti E.M.T.'s or the Wichita County Amusement Association in care of the funeral home.
