Ruth Evelyn Betlack, age 89, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Wichita County Long Term Care in Leoti, Kansas. Ruth was a New Year's baby born on January 1, 1921 at Leoti, Kansas the daughter of Robert "Sumner" & Emma Sanderson Garnes. She was an only child who loved school and music. She studied hard and was named valedictorian of the 1939 graduating class of Wichita County High School in Leoti, Kansas. She took piano lessons from an early age and continued to play throughout her life. After graduation, she worked as a switchboard operator in Leoti until her marriage to Otto Betlack in December of 1939 at Cimarron, Kansas. He passed away on November 20, 1985 at Leoti, Kansas. They made their home in Leoti for all of their married life except for a few years on an Oregon mink ranch. Ruth was a homemaker, actively supporting her children in their school and sports activities and an accompanist to many community vocal music groups in the Wichita County area. Many rehearsals were in her home, so music often filled the air. She was also the church organist and secretary at the United Methodist Church in Leoti, Kansas for over thirty-five years, playing not only on Sunday, but for innumerable weddings, funerals and other special activities throughout the community. Ruth was a member of the United Methodist Church and Rebeccah Lodge both of Leoti, Kansas. She also enjoyed playing bridge, dancing and having coffee with her friends. A highlight for her was her 80th birthday celebration, which included a reception in Leoti with family and friends and a trip to Hawaii where she realized a dream of riding in a helicopter. Ruth always wore a smile and had a cheerful disposition. Ruth's surviving family members include One daughter and her spouse- Carol & Herbert Lindsley- Leawood, Kansas Four grandchildren and spouses- Brent & Svetlana Betlack- Chesapeake, Virginia Anne & Scott Linton- Cross Junction, Virginia Erik & Kayo Lindsley- Beverly Hills California Greg Lindsley- Seattle, Washington Five great grandchildren- Reese Linton, Paige Linton, Edvard Betlack, Marilyn Lindsley and Laura Betlack. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a son; Jess Betlack. Private graveside services will be held at Leoti Cemetery in Leoti, Kansas A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Leoti, Kansas with the Reverend Mike Howard officiating. There will be no calling times. Memorials may be given to the Music Ministry Department at the United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
