Obituary of Henry McClure

Henry I. McClure, age 88, died at Scott County Hospital on Wednesday, April 14, 2010.
He was born May 5, 1921 in Kansas City, KS to Ernest and Josephine (Miller) McClure. As a youngster, he lived in Kansas City until he moved with his parents to Luray, KS where he spent the remainder of his childhood, graduating from Luray High School in 1939. Henry served three years in the U.S. Army with the 47th Engineers in the South Pacific during WWII. On September 18, 1942, he was united in marriage to Ethel Lucile McCoy in Lincoln, KS
After the war, Henry worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for several years before moving his family to Twin Falls, ID. While they were living in Twin Falls, his daughter, Patricia, passed away on November 10, 1947.
In June of 1948 Henry and Ethel moved their family back to Luray, Kansas where Henry worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation. In 1972 he assumed the KDOT position of Graham County Supervisor in Hill City where he stayed until his retirement, November 18, 1984.
Henry enjoyed spending as much time as possible tending his garden in the summer months and traveling with Ethel in their camper visiting their children and grandchildren and wintering in warm Yuma, Arizona.
Henry was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church; VFW Post #6240, both in Russell, KS; American Legion #0309, Luray, KS and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #646, Great Bend, KS.
Henry is survived by his wife, Ethel, his son and his wife, Dennis Henry and Marilyn McClure, Cerro Gordo, IL; his daughter and her husband, Gail and Dave Bradshaw, Newport, OR; his daughter and her husband, Colleen and John Beaton, Scott City, KS; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Heidi and Tom Hall, Oreana, IL; Vincent Henry and Krista McClure, Evansville, IN; Audra and Jim Nicholls, Martinsville, IN; Sara and Skip Coryell, Hamilton, MI; Seth and Julie Bradshaw, Portland, OR; Joshua and Kai Beaton, Scott City, KS and Aaron and Holly Beaton, Scott City, KS; 18 great-grandchildren, Matt and his wife, Sutton Hall, Colorado Springs, CO; Cody Hall, Oreana, IL; Haleigh, Cayden Henry and Ashlynn McClure, all of Evansville, IN; Alexsa Franklin, Ava and Hunter Nicholls all of Martinsville, IN; Christopher and his wife Michelle Coryell, Weyerhaeuser, WI; Marissa Coryell, Menomonie, WI; Cathy, Phillip, Cedar and Phoenix Coryell, all of Hamilton, MI; Kira Bradshaw, Portland, OR; Trenedy, Grace and Kaleb Beaton, all of Scott City, KS; his three great-great-grandchildren, Arianna, Marlee and Landen Hall, Colorado Springs, CO and one brother, Harry Lee McClure, Topeka, KS. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Clifford Leroy McClure; his daughter, Patricia Lynn McClure and his great-grandson, Lawson Joel Beaton.
Funeral services for Henry I. McClure will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the United Methodist Church, 412 College Street, Scott City. Pastor Jon Tuttle, will officiate.
A military graveside service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the Luray City Cemetery in Luray, Kansas with Dennis McClure officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial funds may be given to Prairie View Church of the Brethren or donors' choice.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday and 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday.
