ETHEL LUCILE MANGANO, AGE 85, PASSED AWAY ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2007 AT HER HOME IN WEST BERNE, NEW YORK. SHE WAS BORN DECEMBER 23, 1921 AT HORACE, KANSAS, THE DAUGHTER OF BERT & ETHEL KLINE. SHE GREW UP AND RECEIVED HER FORMAL EDUCATION IN WESTERN KANSAS. SHE MET HER FUTURE HUSBAND JOE AT FORT HAYS STATE UNIVERSITY WHERE SHE OBTAINED A TEACHING CERTIFICATE. AFTER COLLEGE, ETHEL TAUGHT IN ONE ROOM SCHOOLS IN KANSAS. SHE MARRIED JOE IN 1944. SHORTLY AFTER THEIR MARRIAGE, JOE WENT INTO THE NAVY AND SERVED IN THE PACIFIC THEATER ABOARD THE USS WASP. AFTER THE WAR, THEY MOVED TO MAHOPAC, NEW YORK WHERE THY LIVED FROM 1946 UNTIL 1962. ETHEL TAUGHT 5TH GRADE FOR 13 YEARS IN MAHOPAC AND FOR THREE YEARS AT HALDANE PUBLIC SCHOOL IN COLD SPRINGS, NEW YORK. IN 1963 THEY MOVED TO WEST BERNE, NEW YORK WHERE SHE BECAME A KINDERGARTEN TEACHER AT BERNE-KNOX SCHOOL UNTIL 1973. ETHEL RECEIVED HER MASTERS DEGREE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ONEONTA OVER SEVERAL YEARS AS A PART TIME STUDENT. SHE ENJOYED TRAVELING, AND HAD STUDIED SHAKESPEARE IN ENGLAND IN 1977. IN 1991 SHE TRAVELED TO MOSCOW, RUSSIA THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY OF ONEONTA. ETHEL AND HER SISTER BERTA ADELE KLINE ALSO WENT ON SEVERAL CRUISES TO ALASKA AND THE CARIBBEAN. ETHEL WAS AN AVID ANTIQUE COLLECTOR; SHE ESPECIALLY LOVED TO COLLECT ANTIQUE TOOTHPICK HOLDERS. SHE WAS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL TOOTHPICK HOLDER COLLECTOR SOCIETY. SHE WAS ALSO AN ACCOMPLISHED GARDENER WHO NOT ONLY GREW PLANTS BUT ALL SORTS OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. SHE WAS AN EXCELLENT COOK WHO COULD COOK JUST ABOUT ANYTHING, INCLUDING FRESH GAME. ETHEL IS SURVIVED BY HER LOVING HUSBAND, JOSEPH MANGANO, HER SONS PHILIP MANGANO OF EAGLE, IDAHO AND HIS WIFE CINDY AND HER GRANDSON JOE; ROBERT MANGANO OF PETALIMA, CALIFORNIA AND HIS WIFE PATSY; HER DAUGHTER LICILE (TISH) KARPOY OF JOHNSTOWN, NEW YORK AND TISH'S HUSBAND KURT KARPOY AND HER GRANDCHILDREN KLAIRE, KARSON AND KAYE; HER SISTER, BERTA ADELE KLINE OF EAGLE, IDAHO; HER BROTHER IN LAW JOHN MUSCHIO AS WELL AS HIS SONS, JOHN AND GLENN AND HIS DAUGHTER ARLENE O'DELL. FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD ON SATURDEY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2007 AT FREDENDALL FUNERAL HOME IN ALTAMONT, NEW YORK. GRAVE SIDE SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 11:00 A.M., TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2007 AT GREELEY COUNTY CEMETERY IN TRIBUNE, KANSAS WITH THE REVEREND LES ELLIS OFFICIATING.
