TONY E. JEWELL, AGE 85, DIED THURSDAY, MAY 25, 2006 AT HIS HOME IN GARDEN CITY, KS. HE WAS BORN ON MARCH 13, 1921 AT GARDEN CITY, KS , THE SON OF WILLIAM MASON & RHODA ELSIE KUNS JEWELL. A LIFETIME RESIDENT OF GARDEN CITY, HE WAS PRESIDENT, GENERAL MANAGER & ANNOUNCER OF KIUL RADIO FOR 40 YEARS, RETIRING IN 1986. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, THE TYRIAN MASONIC LODGE, WAS A FORMER ROTARIAN AND HE BELONGED TO THE MIDIAN SHRINE TEMPLE OF WICHITA. HE WAS A LIFE MEMBER OF THE DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS, THE VFW AND THE ELKS LODGE. HE WAS PAST COMMANDER OF THE AMERICAN LEGION, PAST PRESIDENT OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND THE KANSAS ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS. HE SERVED ON THE CITY COMMISSION FOR 6 YEARS AND WAS THE MAYOR FOR GARDEN CITY IN 1975. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE GARDEN CITY HIGH SCHOOL, THE ROUNDBALL CLASSIC, THE GARDEN CITY COMMUNITY COLLEGE, THE KANSAS ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS AND THE SPORTSCASTERS HALLS OF FAME. HE RECEIVED THE GROVER COBB AWARD FROM THE KU SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM, THE HOD HUMISTON AWARD AND THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD BOTH FROM THE KANSAS ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS WHICH PRESENTS THE TONY JEWELL AWARD YEARLY TO THE KANSAN WHO DOES OUTSTANDING WORK N THE FIELD OF ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT. HE WAS ONE OF THE FINNEY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETIES PIONEERS OF THE YEAR AND HE RECEIVED A PROCLAMATION FROM THE GOVERNOR OF KANSAS FOR SERVICE PERFORMED WHILE ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF VALLEY HOPE. HE WAS A W.W. II U.S. ARMY VETERAN. ON JULY 28, 1942 HE MARRIED MAXINE E. LESSOR AT GARDEN CITY. SHE SURVIVES. OTHER SURVIVORS INCLUDE: 1 SON, RICK JEWELL OF DODGE CITY, KANSAS, 2 DAUGHTERS, RHONDA ATKINSON OF BEULAH, COLORADO AND DENISE JEWELL-OLSEN OF ANCHORAGE, ALASKA, 6 GRANDCHILDREN AND 6 GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN. HE WAS PRECEEDED IN DEATH BY 1 BROTHER, FLOYD MASON JEWELL. MEMORIAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 10:30AM, TUESDAY, MAY 30, 2006 AT THE COMMUNITY CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH IN GARDEN CITY, KANSAS, WITH REVEREND DENNIS GILHOUSEN OFFICIATING. INURNMENT WILL BE IN VALLEY VIEW CEMETERY, GARDEN CITY, KS. THERE WILL BE NO PUBLIC VISITATION.
