Betty was born at the family home in McDonald, Kansas, on April 16, 1928 to Edna Ellis and Fred Edgett. She passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2007, at Homestead Health & Rehabilitation Center in Garden City, Kansas.
Betty was married to Beldon Jenik on September 25, 1949, in Oakley, Kansas. They had four children: Karen, Kyle, JoAnn and Shelley. Betty and Beldon lived with their children in McDonald, Kansas until 1964 when the moved to Castle Rock, Colorado. Betty worked as a grocery store clerk, later as a factory worker at Ensign Bickford making detonating primacord and then retired. In 1987, they moved back to McDonald where Betty enjoyed helping the Lyons with farm sales serving food, helping with community dinners and the American Legion dinners. She was an excellent cook. Many of her neighbors enjoyed her fried chicken, potato salad and homemade cinnamon rolls. Betty enjoyed attending the McDonald Senor Center dinners and spent many afternoons with friends playing dominos. Betty was an avid bingo player and enjoyed going to Bird City and playing there hosted by the Bird City American Legion Auxiliary. One of the things she talked about in the last month was how much fun she had attending the Santa Day at the American Legion in McDonald and playing bingo.
In 2002, Betty moved to Oberlin, Kansas, to be near Beldon who was a resident at the Cedar Living Center. Betty and her precious little dog Lucy moved to Moyock, North Carolina in 2003 after his passing and lived with her daughter JoAnn and family until 2006 when she came home to Kansas where she lived with her daughter Karen and husband in Garden City. In October of 2007, she moved into Homestead Health and Rehabilitation Center in Garden City.
When Betty was young, she attended the Church of God in McDonald. While living at Homestead she attended the First Christian Church services.
She leaves behind her daughter Karen Ham and husband Jay D. of Garden City, Kansas; Kyle Jenik and wife Vicky of Thornton, Colorado; JoAnn Cleveland and husband Dan of Moyock, North Carolina; and Shelley Adams and husband Bruce of Littleton, Colorado. Fourteen Grandchildren: Jared Harrison of Prairie City, Illinois; Sarah and husband John of Nahant, Massachusetts; Kyle Lee Jenik of US Armed Forces stationed in Iraq; Erin Adams of Aurora, Colorado; Brian Adams and Marc Adams of Littleton, Colorado; Rachelle Cleveland and Ashleigh Cleveland of Moyock, North Carolina; Jamie Rutten and Kyle Rutten of Thornton, Colorado; Seth Schaefer of Omaha, Nebraska; Casey Brecka of Seward, Nebraska; Amber Ham of Chicago, Illinois; and Quade Ham of Minneola, KS. Six Great Grandchildren: Carl and Cameron Robinson of Aurora, Colorado; Claire Kelly Sullivan of Nahant, Massachusetts; Isabelle Schaefer of Cozad, Nebraska; and Addie and Trevin Brecka of Seward, Nebraska. Two sisters: Joan Vontz of Benkelman, Nebraska and Wauneta Schnerwerk of Wichita, Kansas. Two brothers: Wayne Edgett of Scottsdale, Arizona and Lloyd Edgett of Burleson, Texas as well as other family and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her Father and Mother, her husband Beldon and four brothers: Harold Edgett, Lester Edgett, Earl Edgett and Willard Edgett; two sisters: Leola Gaughan and Erma Randall; and one Great Grandson, Cameron Brecka.
Graveside services will be held at the Grace Cemetery in McDonald, Kansas at 10:00am on Friday, June 29, 2007 with the Rev. Robert Nuckolls presiding. There will be no calling times as cremation has taken place. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the Homestead Health and Rehabilitation Center or St. Catherine Hospital Hospice both in Garden City, Kansas, or the McDonald Senior Center, McDonald, Kansas all in care of Price and Sons Funeral Home, 620 N.
