Lakin, Kansas
John Galen "Jack" Greer, age 83, died Sunday, June 15th, 2008 at the Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, Kansas. He was born June 14th, 1925 at Olivet, Wisconsin, the son of Arthur H. & Lavina (Wampach) Greer. He served his country and was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps serving in Saipan-Tinian and Iwo Jima from August 1943 through November 1945 in World War II. Jack has been a Wichita County resident since 1947, appointed as Postmaster of Selkirk, worked in construction and bridge building, and sold Watkins Products. He served as Wichita, Greeley, & Finney County Appraiser from 1967 until his retirement in 1987. He moved to Holcomb, Kansas in 2000.
Jack was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church of Deerfield, Kansas and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #6752 of Leoti, Kansas.
On August 28, 1946 he married Mary M. Kleymann at Marienthal, Kansas. She survives.
Other survivors include- Six sons and their wives- John Jr. & Patricia Greer of Liberal, Kansas, Gregory & Patty Greer of Austin, Texas, Montie & Betty Greer of Deerfield, Kansas, Robert & Lori Greer of Liberal, Kansas, Shane & Vicki Greer of Olathe, Kansas and James Greer of Garden City, Kansas; Two daughters and their husbands- Mary & Rod Powers of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin and Christine & Jerald Murphy of Garden City, Kansas; Thirty-Three Grandchildren and Twenty-Three Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Vigil Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Lakin, Kansas.
Funeral Mass will be held at !0:30 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Lakin, Kansas with Father Mike Helms officiating.
Interment will be in the Deerfield Cemetery in Deerfield, KS with full military honors.
Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas.
Memorials may be given to Christ the King Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.
