Leoti

Lorraine Mae (Appl) Heronemus, age 93, passed away on August 25, 2022, at the Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas surrounded by her family. Lorraine was born on December 29, 1928, on the Appl farm homestead south of Leoti to Frank & Hester (Wagner) Appl; their oldest child.

Lorraine was a life long member of the Leoti Community. She attended the Grand Prairie school 5 miles from her home with her cousin Dale, often driven by her Aunt Violet Appl. She graduated from the 8th grade, but later got her High School GED by mail.

She played softball as centerfielder. She and her brother Morris helped work on the family farm. She was born a farmer, driving tractor at an early age & continued throughout her life.

On August 6, 1953, Lorraine married the love of her life, Harold Heronemus in Ness City, Kansas. Together they began farming and raising cattle. Their enterprise even survived the tornado of 1999, though they had to rebuild their farm & House on the Homestead. Harold passed away on May 21, 2018.

Lorraine loved her chickens and garden - you would never find a weed in her garden. She was a member of the NRA Golden Eagles and the VFW Women’s Auxiliary. She loved going to auctions with her husband and collected antiques, coins, and guns. She was passionate about guns and was an excellent shot. She also had an interest in writing poetry and was even once published.

Family was important to Lorraine and Harold. They attended all the activities and sports of their children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her children Dan & Cuma Heronemus of Wichita, Kansas, Tim Heronemus of Leoti, Kansas, Lori and Steve Crathorne of Victoria, Kansas, Randy & Marsha Heronemus of Leoti, Kansas, Brother-in-law Clarence Heronemus of Amarillo, Texas, Sister-in-law Anna & JR Means of Phoenix, Arizona, eight grandchildren, and twenty one great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother Morris Appl.
