Obituary of Everett Howell

Tribune

Roy Everett Howell, age 96, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2022, at the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, Kansas. He was born on October 16, 1925, in Elkhart, Kansas to Charlie Maddison and Bessie Stewart Howell. He was a resident of Tribune since 1951 where he was a farmer and rancher and a member of the First Baptist Church and the VFW. Everett served on the Greeley County Extension Board, the Greeley County Hospital Board, and the Greeley County Farm Bureau Board. He also served his community as a 4-H leader, Fair supporter, and Recycling Center organizer.

Everett proudly served his nation as a member of the United States Marine Corps during World War II from January 19, 1944, to May 8, 1946.  After enlisting he went to communication school.  While in Boot Camp, he qualified as a Marksman on the M1 rifle.  During this time, his first tour of duty was the start of the invasion of Iwo Jima.  His job was to string telephone wires during his time in Japan and China.  He was wounded in action while he was there.  Everett witnessed the famous raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi.  Everett was awarded the Purple Heart when he was honorably discharged on May 8th, 1946.  His rank upon discharge was Corporal.   Of the 20 months he served, 6 months of it was spent on the troopships on the sea traveling.  As a result, he did not like the water. 

On May 18, 1950, Everett married Carol Borden in Goodwell, Oklahoma. She passed away on March 16, 2007.

Survivors include his son, Danny & Brittany Howell of LaCrosse, Kansas, his daughter, Debbie Wise of Fowler, Kansas, one daughter-in-law, Jamie Howell of Lenexa, Kansas,  two sisters-in-law, Violet Howell of Lovington, New Mexico, Edna Howell of Mansfield, Texas, nine grandchildren and their spouses, and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Everett was preceded in death by his parents, wife, children - Everly & Steve Oakes, Larry Howell, son-in-law - Scott Wise, and his siblings - Myrtle Riggs, Dora Mae Rammage, Cecil Howell, TJ Howell, and Jerald Howell.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. (MST) at the First Baptist Church in Tribune, Kansas with pastors Shannon Schneider and Billy Ed Rammage presiding. Service will be live-streamed at www.priceandsons.com.

Burial will be in the Greeley County Cemetery in Tribune, Kansas.

Memorials may be written to the Greeley County Recycling Center or the Greeley County Hospital in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. (MST) Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home at 322 Second in Tribune, Kansas.
