Franklin Keana Opunui, age 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 7, 2021, at the Parklane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on November 3, 1936, in Maui, Hawaii, the son of John Likua Opunui and Mary Ellen Elaina Huihui. He was a resident of Dighton Kansas since 1979, after moving from Junction City, Kansas. He worked for Sprint and United telephone companies and retired in 1986.
Franklin was a member of the Mormon church and a member of the American Legion. From 1953 until 1976, he served in the United States Army as an Aircraft mechanic & Repairman and instructor.
Franklin earned numerous awards; the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct medal, Master Aircraft crewman badge, Vietnam campaign medal with 60 device, five oversea service bars, National defense, Service medal 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. During his time in service, Franklin served in Vietnam, Korea, Germany, France, and Thailand. At the time of his release, he had earned the rank of Sergeant E7 and most proud of staying alive.
On September 6, 1982, Franklin married Nancy Zelfer in Ness City, Kansas. She survives and lives in Dighton, Kansas.
Franklin was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter.
