Obituary of Marjorie Lucile Vanderweide

Marjorie Lucile Vanderweide, age 85, died on Monday, May 18, 2020 at Derby Health and Rehabilitation, Derby, KS. She was born on March 1, 1935 in Shallow Water Kansas to Richard Basil and Marjorie Ruth (Toadvine) Roark. She was a Garden City resident from 1959-2019 having moved from Atchison, Kansas. Marjorie was a talented organist, vocalist, and pianist. Marjorie taught lessons for many years and served as the organist at the First United Methodist Church. Marjorie was an active member of the community throughout her life. She was involved in: United Methodist Women, PEO (Chapter X), Kappa Phi, Order of Eastern Star (Chapter 359), Piano Teachers League, Co-founder of Astrea, Stephen’s Ministry, Disciple Bible Study, Community Concerts Board, Boy Scouts and Girl scouts – Troop leader, Mother of an Eagle Scout, Rainbow Girls - Advisory Board, Grand Cross of Color, Mother of KS Grand Worth Advisor, AFS – Foreign exchange students Hans & Thomas of Germany, Frances of Belgium, Children’s Choir Director and long-time member of the First United Methodist Chancel Choir On January 28, 1956 Marjorie was married to Joe H. Vanderweide at the First Methodist Church in Atchison, Kansas. He survives and lives in Derby, KS. Other survivors include: Son, Richard (Carol) Vanderweide of Eldridge, Missouri Daughter, Linda Innes of Mulvane, Kansas Brother, Richard “Dick” (Sandy) Roark of Lakewood, Colorado Six Grandchildren, Shailey (Kiel Tracy) Innes of Wichita, Kansas, Reegan (Breck Roop) Innes of Wichita, Kansas, Connor Innes of Mulvane, Kansas, Jessica (Chan) Busby of Topeka, Kansas, Bryan (Stephanie) Vanderweide of Longview, Washington, Timothy (Jessica) Vanderweide of Scott City, Kansas Six Great Grandchildren, Everly and Tinley Tracy, Nicholas and Madison Freeland, Alex and Elianna Vanderweide A Celebration of life service will be held at a later date at the First United Methodist Church. Calling hours will be Tuesday, May 26, 2020 from 1-8 at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, May 27 at 2 p.m. at the Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas. Services will be streamed live on the Price & Sons Funeral Home Facebook page to keep attendance in line with the Ad Astra phased reopening plan.
