My sincerest condolences to your family. Dessa worked for my dad, Harlan Miller, at the Gambles store in Tribune for I don't know how many years...maybe 20! I worked with Dessa helping my dad in the summers and on weekends by dusting, waiting on customers, and playing cards with just a few minutes before we would close the store. My favorite memory was every end of year we had to take inventory. Dessa could do this by herself but I loved to come in and run the adding machine while she counted items. My dad's store was spotless as she always was dusting something and every single night swept the carpeting as well as ran the duster on the polished side of the store. She taught me how to wrap packages for birthdays and Christmas!! She also taught me how to make bows with the bow maker. She always kept busy doing something. I would also help her decorate the front of the store at Christmas time!
I also remember when we had a terrible dust storm back in the 70's that lasted for 3 days which covered the entire store with a thick layer of dust. We spent days sweeping everything and dusting off the appliances, the merchandise and the flooring. It was a mess, needless to say, but Dessa never complained and just always managed to have a good time even when it wasn't fun!
I will cherish our time we spent together and will always have fond memories of Dessa!! May God Bless you in your time of mourning. Love, Marsha Young
