Obituary of Eugene Berning

Eugene Berning, age 89, passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas. Eugene was born April 20, 1926 on the Berning family homestead near Marienthal, Kansas, the son of Anthony John & Hilda Louise (Simons) Berning. A lifetime resident of Wichita County, Kansas, he was a farmer and businessman. Eugene was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both in Marienthal, Kansas. He enjoyed being an active member of his Church; serving as a song leader helped fulfill and express his love of music. Also, being on the Church Finance and Building committees, gave him an avenue to give glory to God in being a part of the building of the current Church in Marienthal, Kansas. His love and passion for new challenges found an outlet in carpentry, new projects and making something once old, renewed and useful. On November 21, 1951, Eugene married the love of his life, Marguerite Biel at Marienthal, Kansas. Eugene’s surviving family includes- His Wife of 64 years- Marguerite Berning- Leoti, Kansas Five Children- Duane & Leta Berning- Leoti, Kansas Larry & Debbie Berning- Sussex, Wisconsin Gary Berning- Leoti, Kansas Mark Berning- Leoti, Kansas Suzanne Nix- Beaumont, Texas Thirteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one great great grandchild Two sisters- Jo Ann Jesko- Hereford, Texas Virginia & Arden Knobbe- Marienthal, Kansas Two Sisters-in-Law- Evelyn Berning- Marienthal, Kansas Roxanna Berning- Marienthal, Kansas Eugene has been preceded in death by his parents, one daughter-in-law, Ramona Berning, one son-in-law, Charles Nix, three brothers, John Berning, Edmund Berning and Robert Berning, one sister, Mary Louise Simon and two brothers-in-law, Robert Simon and John Jesko. Vigil Services will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday, December 10, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas. Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10:00 am Friday, December 11, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas with Father Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Marienthal, Kansas. Friends may call from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm Wednesday and from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Leoti, Kansas.
