Charles H. Claar Sr., age 76, died Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the Homestead Health and Rehabilitation Center in Garden City, KS. He was born Nov. 27, 1930 in Lakin, Kansas he son of Milton and Sophie Anderson Claar. He grew up in Deerfield, Kansas and graduated as the Valedictorian of Deerfield High School in 1948. In 1950 he graduated from Garden City Junior College with high honors and was a player on the basketball team that placed third in the 1949-1950 National tournament. He farmed from 1948-1954 and was a Fieldman, Agronomy Advisor, Farm Supply Division Manager and General Manager for different CO-OP's in Western Kansas. He was the Seed Sales Manager for Farmland Industries from 1978-1980, District Sales Manager of the Growers Seed Association from 1980-1981 and was Territory Sales Manager for Paymaster Seeds from 1981 until his retirement in 1996. He served 12 years in the KS National Guard as a Commissioned Artillery Officer, Fire Direction Officer, Executive Officer and as Battery Commander of the Garden City Unit. He resigned from the National Guard and the US Army as a Captain in 1963.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, KS. He was a past board member, Cub and Scout Master for the Santa Fe Trail Council BSA. He served on several boards of directors in Southwest Kansas including FFA and numerous agricultural boards and as Board President of Golden Plains Credit Union. A current member of the Elks Lodge, he was a past member of the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He served on several advisory boards throughout the area. He enjoyed playing pool, bowling, flower gardening and attending his grandchildrens and great-grandchildrens events.
On November 26, 1950 he married Donita M. Griggs in Deerfield, Kansas. She survives.
Other Survivors Include: Two Sons; Charles H. Claar, Jr. of Garden City and Larry Claar of Garden City, Kansas: Two Daughters; Sandra Claar of Harper, Kansas and Sheri Green of Garden City, Kansas: One Brother; Ralph Claar of Deerfield, kansas Ten Grandchildren and Nine Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, Kansas with the Rev. David Bell presiding.
Friends may call from 1pm-8pm on Monday and from 10am-8pm Tuesday at the Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City.
Interment will be in the Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas.
Memorials may be given to the GCCC Endowment for the Charles Claar Sr. Memorial Basketball Scholarship or to the Friends of the Lee Richardson Zoo both in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home of Garden City, Kansas.
