Alice Summers--what a long life, filled with family and community. As friends of Delora and Gene Stites we have witnessed for almost 50 years the love and devotion Delora has shared with her mother, Alice, and with the entire immediate and extended family. Delora had lengthly conversations with Alice everyday, often during a K. C. Royals baseball game, for Alice was a devoted fan. We know Delora and her large and close family will greatly miss their mom, Alice, but we also know they will continue to be blessed by over a century of memories. A remembrance from the Great Big Greenhouse Nursery has been sent to the Stites Family in memory of Alice Summers. Please pick a planting that will bloom each year and serve as a living reminder of your mom. Deepest Sympathy, Dan & Arvina Lumley

Our thoughts and prayers to a wonderful family. I still remember spending time at the farm with Mr and Mrs Summers when I was attending college at Garden City with Merle. She treated me as if I were of her kids. She will be missed.

Of course, I have so many wonderfully amazing memories of my GREAT-Grandmother but I would like to highlight the ones I hold closest to my heart.
BASKETBALL - Everyone who knows me knows that basketball is in my blood...it's who I am. It is the God-given passion that has always been the driving force in my life. I can't imagine that there are too many people in this world who can say that their grandparents AND great-grandparents were their biggest fans!!! Even into college, I can still see Grandma Summers sitting in the stands at my games...it didn't matter that she could not see the game well, she was there to support her granddaughter. She even made it to some games when I was coaching...I'll bet John Wooden's great-grandma never saw him coach a college game! It was such a huge source of pride for me! Thank you, Grandma!
CARDS - As you all know, Grandma loved to play pitch!!! Grandma Dorothy and I would go to their house 2-3 times a week for a few hands. I don't think anyone realized my level of intelligence at the time, but I would always partner with Grandpa Summers (sometimes, though, that was like "pitch suicide" because he might Shoot the Moon with a 5, 6, 10!!!)...this is why: Grandma and Grandpa had become like "See no evil, Hear no evil" - she couldn't see so well and he could't hear. Grandpa, sharp as he was, also pretended to be forgetful (yeah right!) and would ask across the table, "Now, am I supposed to hold the trey of clubs!?!? (We were in spades.) Grandma would get soooooo irritated with him and holler "Hank, quit talkin' across the table!!" I bet I heard that a thousand times...never got old.
THE JAYHAWKS - Back when Roy was still the coach and I was still a fan, I was coaching at Colby Community College. Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich were seniors and were traveling around to play area seniors. Since the game was at our gym, I got tickets early so Shelly and Grandpa Dean brought Grandma up to the game. They were in the middle section with decent seats, but the announcer allowed Grandma to come down to the scorers table and sit so she could see the game better. They wouldn't have needed the gym lights on the way Grandma was glowing!
Life won't be quite the same without her around but I am so glad to have had her for as long as I did!!! It gives me peace to know that she has reunited with Grandpa Summers, Grandma Dorothy, and Grandpa Dean, as well as many other loved ones. I know that Jesus greeted her with open arms, "Well done My good and faithful servant!!! Welcome Home!!!"

Thoughts and prayers to the entire family. She will be greatly missed but what a blessing to have your Mother for so many years. She always knew who I was when I spoke to her, even though she couldn't see who I was. She was a great lady and a wonderful wife, Mother and Grandmother. I always called her Grandma Summers, even though we were not related I felt a special bond with her. I can now see her dancing with Grandpa Summers and having a wonderful time playing cards and visiting with all of her friends and relatives in Heaven. May her soul rest in peace. Another Angel to watch over the Summers family. Love and prayers, Roxie
